Cockroaches to Worry About in NYC
New York City is famous for its skyline, yellow taxi cabs, pizza, and of course — cockroaches! These pests infest all types of businesses, homes, apartments, and buildings across “The City That Never Sleeps” (as well as Long Island and the surrounding counties). Out of all the pests that live in this area, there are a few species you need to worry about.
- German – German cockroaches are the most common of the indoor cockroaches. This species will be found in warmer and more humid areas, specifically where food is found.
- Brown-banded – Brown-banded cockroaches prefer areas even warmer than their German cousins. They are usually found near the heat source of electronics & appliances.
- American – American cockroaches LOVE heat so they are normally found outside, especially in zoos, farms, and barns. If the conditions are not warm enough you will find them in sewers and water main boxes
- Oriental – Orientals cockroaches live in dark, wet places with cool temperatures. At night they will search for food by entering buildings on the ground floor. They can not fly or climb walls, so look for them in low places.
When you run into a cockroach, it’s safe to assume that there is an entire family of them hiding somewhere close by. Other than being ugly and a nuisance, cockroaches have the ability to spread diseases such as E. Coli and Salmonella. If that weren’t bad enough, their feces, urine, and shed skin casings can trigger allergic reactions and asthma attacks.
In order to remove a cockroach infestation, the right approach must be taken. Identification, inspection, solving sanitation issues, harborage reductions, and physical removal of roaches and egg cases are all things that should be taken into account. In order to protect items such as computers, electronics, and food, certain baiting products, pesticides, and freezing technologies will be used.
