How to Remove Flies From Your Home

Now that the warm weather is back, the simple act of opening your door for too long will expose your home to pesky flies that will take forever to catch. Removing files from your home is rather simple when you know what to do and what tools to use. Removal methods such as traps, swatters, and fly deterrents can all help keep these winged pests out of your home.

Light Traps

The UV lights within light traps lure flies in and then kill them with either an electric shock or a glue board. The key to these light traps is to hang them at least 5 feet in the air and do not let them be seen from the outside as this will attract unwanted flies from outside. Other winged pests like moths can also be killed by this bright trap.

Vinegar/Wine Traps

Other species of flies like the fruit fly can invade your home if you happen to bring home a bad piece of fruit. These little annoyances are attracted to fermented products such as red wine ad apple cider vinegar. Simply place either liquid in a jar or glass and cover it with plastic wrap. Poke a few holes in the plastic wrap so the fruit flies can enter, however, they won’t escape as they will drown in the fermented liquid (sad, but necessary).

Swatters

Everyone knows that you can kill a fly with a fly swatter, but they aren’t the easiest to kill using this method. Get your hands on an electric fly swatter because even if you miss the fly, it should get shocked as long as you graze it. You’ll also avoid having to clean up the mess that comes with squashing a fly against the surfaces in your home. Just be careful not to touch the swatter while it’s on, or else you’ll be in for a shocking treat!

Essential Oils

Spraying essential oils throughout the room or placing a few drops of it in a diffuser should deter flies from hanging around. Certain plants like thyme, basil, lavender, and peppermint all produce essential oils that flies can’t stand. As an alternative to purchasing essential oils, grow some of these plants in small pots on the windowsills of your home. What will be a pleasant smell for you will be a terrible one for your flying nemesis.
