How to Identify Wasps
Wasps are members of the order Hymenoptera and have many similarities to bees. Both produce honey, pollen, and beeswax, both pollinate plants, and both are social insects. The main difference between wasps and bees is that wasps do not live in hives or make honeycombs; instead they tend to build their nests in holes in trees or under eaves. If you see a large brown or black insect buzzing around your garden, chances are it’s a wasp!
Wasps are usually larger than bees. The difference in size can be quite noticeable, with wasps typically measuring 1-2 inches long and bees usually only 1/2 inch or less. Wasps also have longer bodies than those of bees, while their wings tend to be shorter than those of their bee counterparts.
