How to Make Your Home Wild Animal-Proof
Dogs, cats, hamsters — these are normal household animals that are commonly seen in homes.
However, seeing wild animals like squirrels, opossums, and rats run rampant through your home is something you need to address.
If wild animals keep finding their way into your home, here’s what you should do.
- Screens & Caps – Open chimneys and roof vents are popular areas around the house where squirrels and other rodents can sneak into your home. Place the appropriate cap on your chimney, while also placing screens on each roof vent to block these gaps from becoming entrances.
- Good Garbage – Raccoons can easily find their way onto your property and into your trash if the scent of the garbage is strong enough. To prevent raccoons from hanging around your property, throw all garbage in scented bags, place the bags in the garbage can, and secure the lid tightly. Consider placing bungee ropes or a brick on the can to prevent the lid from being opened.
- Trimming the Trees – Squirrels and other rodents can make their way to your roof by climbing nearby trees. To prevent these wild animals from getting too close to your home, trim any tree branches that hang over your home or close to rooflines and windows. Make sure the closest branch is at least six feet away from your house.
- Yard Maintenance – You might not be doing much yard work during the winter, but you can still keep your property clean. Make sure there’s no debris or leaf piles anywhere that could house small animals. If you have piles of wood for a wood burning stove or fireplace, make sure they are at least 20 feet away from the house. Not only can small animals hide here, but this is a termite’s paradise.
Wild animals are unpredictable and are clever enough to find their way into your home, so it’s up to you to put a stop to that!
