How Weather Conditions Affect Pests
Weather conditions have a direct effect on pests’ behaviors, especially those that are exclusively outdoors. Even though you may not see them during the winter, most insects are still around. As the temperatures drop, insects turn to hibernation and must find a way to stay warm. They do this 2 ways:
- Overwintering: Insects bury themselves deep underground or in trees to stay warm. The snow and ice actually acts as insulators, keeping them warm. If they can find a way inside a warm house or building, they will. Frequent weather variations resulting in freezing and thawing could invite bugs to emerge early. However the danger for insects lies in the refreezing, so it’s important for the insects to stay dry.
- Internal Antifreeze: Insects can use the antifreeze chemical in their bodies to prevent ice crystals from forming in their organs and cells. Even if the surrounding fluid freezes, there is no harm done to the insect.
The winter also brings excessive rain and moisture, which is ideal for insects for a number of reasons. To start, mosquitos can lay eggs in even the smallest amount of standing water, leading to a rise in the population. It is also great for the growing trees and plants which support the plant bugs.
Rain can also encourage pests to find shelter in the home or office, as they are searching for higher, drier land with food.
Freezing temperatures, snow and ice don’t mean all insects die off in the winter. Furthermore, the recent drop in temperature will likely not affect indoor pests, like bed bugs and cockroaches. They could still cause major problems for your home or business, especially if untreated.
