Keep Your Garden Safe From Pests
We talk a lot about protecting your home from pests, and this includes your backyard and garden! When it comes to keeping pests away from your plants, vegetables and flowers, it’s important to be proactive in your approach. This will decrease the odds that you’ll need to use chemical methods that you’d rather stay away from.
No garden is totally free of pests, and not all pests are bad. The following pests are beneficial to have in your garden and should be left alone if spotted:
- Ladybugs
- Praying mantis
- Honeybee
- Dragonfly
Most other garden insects can be picked away safely, however it’s important that you properly identify what you’re dealing with. If you’re unsure, start by researching the host plant. Often times, insects target specific plants. You can then identify whether or not the pest will cause damage.
Some garden bugs like slugs and caterpillars are large enough to spot and easily removable.
Still, the best way to deter pests from attacking your garden is by creating a physical barrier. Consider the following:
- Fences: for larger pests like rodents and rabbits.
- Row covers: lightweight fabric sheets that drape over posts and cover plants without smothering them.
- Netting: lightweight mesh that protects from squirrels and birds.
