Renting an Apartment with Bed Bugs
The risk of having bed bugs increases if you live in a multi-family home. How is this so? Bed bugs can travel through walls from one apartment to the next, thus increasing your chances of becoming infested. Here’s some basic information you need to know about bed bug infestations in your apartment.
Say Something
The tenant is responsible for notifying the landlord if there is an infestation of bed bugs. The landlord of the building might not live on the property so without notification they would have no idea of this issue. Inspections aren’t done all too frequently so be sure to report any pest problems immediately.
Access Rights
Tenants must grant access to the landlord before they can complete an inspection of the apartment. Landlords must ask permission 24 hours before entering and must let the tenant know who will be in the apartment. If there is evidence of bed bugs then the tenant will be forced to give full access to all rooms in order to treat the infestation.
Comply With Directions
Once an infestation is recognized the tenant must comply with all instructions given by the landlord. These instruction may come from the landlord through the pest control company hired to manage the infestation. There are steps in order to prepare the apartment for treatment and it is the tenant’s responsibility to follow these directions within reasonable measures.
As a tenant, it is your responsibility to know what your rights are and what obligation falls on you.
