If you surveyed a group of people and ask them which animal they were afraid of, a majority of them will probably say spiders. What makes them so feared — is it the eight legs, the way they crawl, or is it the sheer size of the larger ones? Read these facts so you can understand them a little better.

  1. Hair – Spiders do have vision, but do not rely on it the way most animals do. The hairs on their body are extremely sensitive and will recognize vibrations. These hairs can read the vibrations on the ground, while some species will have other hairs that can pick up on vibrations in the air.
  2. Out With the Old – Spiders have an exoskeleton that they can shed every so often. When they decide it’s time, they’ll moult their old skeleton. This regeneration process also applies for when the spider loses a limb.
  3. Pure Size – The longest species of spider in the world is the Giant Huntsman which can be as long as 12 inches. The largest species of spider in the world is the Goliath Birdeater which can weigh more than 6 ounces.
  4. Danger – While there are many species of spider that can be a threat to your health, there is one that holds the crown in North America. The most venomous spider on this continent is the Black Widow, which does inhabit New York.
  5. Friend or Foe? – Many people consider spiders to be their enemy, but are they really? While there are some spiders that do bite out of self-defense, many will occupy your home in order to feed on other insects. In essence, some of them are natural pest control professionals themselves.

Knowing the facts about any pest that may inhabit your house is important. While these little fellas aren’t the biggest threat, having a large quantity of them in your home could mean that they are feeding on a separate infestation of pests.
