Spring Pests That Are Making Their Anticipated Return
No more running to and from your car. No more heavy jackets. And no more snow!
The warm weather is finally making its way toward New York and we couldn’t be more excited!
Do you know what else is making its way back into our lives? Warm weather pests. They’re coming out of hiding and are ready to start feeding (and infesting your home).
Bees & Wasps
Ah, the all too familiar black and yellow (no we’re not talking football here). Bees and wasps will come out of hiding and will begin to rebuild their nests and hives in order to house their queens.
Since both bees and wasps can sting (even though bees aren’t typically aggressive), it’s best to try and avoid them at all costs. Avoid attracting them by avoiding powerful scents (perfume and sweat) and bright colors (or floral patterns).
If you happen to get stung, antihistamines can prevent swelling and ibuprofen can limit pain. However, if you are allergic to whichever one you’re stung by, head straight to the emergency room.
For those that discover a nest or hive on their property, contact your local pest control company for removal.
Ticks
This is the pest your mother warned you about before you went outside to play when you were a child. Ever since those childhood years, you’ve still retained the fear of ever getting bit by a tick. And for good reason — Lyme disease can be deadly!
Ticks are found in heavily wooded areas, so it’s important to wear long sleeves and pants during hikes. They can also be found on properties with heavy vegetation, which is why homeowners (AKA you) need to stay on top of your property’s maintenance.
If you happen to get bit by a tick, you have two options. The first one is to head to the doctor immediately and have a physician remove it for you. However, it’s important to remove the tick ASAP, so you can do it yourself (as long as you know what you’re doing).
