What Happens When You Purge Your Home of Old Junk
Clearing your home of clutter and junk isn’t just the key for a happy home — it’s the key to a pest-free home too!
This is what happens when you take the time to live a more minimalist lifestyle…
Clutter-Free is the Key to Being Pest-Free
A large majority of pests LOVE clutter. For example, rodents, cockroaches, bed bugs, silverfish, beetles, etc. use clutter as a form of shelter.
This is why most basements and attics are home to many species of pests — because they’re used as storage rooms that are almost always over-filled with boxes and belongings.
Pests will use this clutter as their shelter because this is where they feel the safest. These areas of serious clutter are oftentimes also areas with increased moisture — which is another popular and desirable thing among most pests.
In rooms or areas of the house with stacks of boxes, piles of papers, or minimal walking room, take the time to go through the items and get rid of what you don’t want. Of the remaining items, place them in sealable, plastic storage containers and then place them on a shelving unit off of the ground.
When you remove clutter, you decrease the number of hiding spots in your home where pests will hide. Therefore, the cleaner and more organized your home is, the less chance you have of developing a major pest infestation.
Be Careful When You Donate
Donating your old furniture, clothes, and belongings is the best thing to do with the old items you no longer want. It allows someone else to reuse your things without them ever having to hit a landfill.
However, you should inspect all of the items you donate or give away before doing so. Look for signs of bed bugs (actual bed bugs, eggs, red dots, etc.) and anything that raises a red flag should be thrown away immediately.
If you do notice something looks like a bed bug may have infested it, go ahead and inspect the rest of your home — especially the room where that item lived.

You don’t need to hold onto every item you’ve ever gotten. Sometimes it’s best to let some things go…
