Bed Bugs

How to Identify BED BUGS

If you have an active bed bug infestation, typically you can see an adult bed bug with the naked eye. Adults are typically about the size of an apple seed and have a reddish brown color. Immature stages of bed bugs are harder to spot with the human eye, but you may notice small translucent, white or yellowish figures that are smaller in size.

THE SIGNS OF BED Bugs

You may notice small reddish or rust colored spots on your mattress or bed sheets, which are bed bugs that have been crushed. Alternatively, bed bugs also may leave behind excrement that show as dark spots on your bed fabrics.

Other signs that should not be ignored include small itchy red spots on the skin, often in a straight line, an unexplained musty odor in your home, or small dark spots on your walls.

Bed Bug Infestations increasing in New York

Bed bug infestations have grown dramatically. Just five years ago, bed bugs on Long Island, New York City, Westchester, or Rockland County were rare. Since then, bed bug infestations are up over 125%.

The National Pest Management Association’s bed bug study “Bugs Without Borders” has been tracking the trend. In 2001, only 11% of pest control companies nationwide had responded to a bed bug call. By 2011, more than 99% had dealt with bug infestations. 84% say calls for bed bug treatment are increasing.

Here are some of the top contributing factors to bed bug problems:

82% Increased Travel

More people are traveling, and due to bed bugs' hitchhiking nature, that means travelers are picking these pests up along the way.

66% Lack of Awareness and Vigilance

Many people don't know the basics for how bed bugs are picked up, how to look for them, and how to prevent bringing them inside their homes.

Bed Bug Infestations in Commercial Properties

Bed bug infestations are not just a threat to your home. These pests move beyond beds and are now common in places of business.

90% of pest control companies have treated bed bugs in apartments, condominiums and single-family homes

80% increase in hotels and motels—up 67% between 2010 and 2011

54% increase in college dorms—up from 35% a year ago

46% increase in nursing homes—up from 25%

Bed Bug Treatment methods

Bed bug treatment methods have evolved in the last five years. Killing bed bugs can be a challenge. Bed bugs are now resistant to most pesticides. If you don’t rid of bed bugs in every life stage, from egg to adult, it will be impossible to completely exterminate a bed bug infestation. You may do more harm than good, spreading the infestation throughout your home.

Fast response is important. Don’t try to take on this pest on your own. You need to talk to a professional who has the right tools and bed bug treatment options to kill bed bugs at their first infestation site—before they spread.

Some of the new bed bug treatment techniques, ways of preventing bed bug infestations and options for getting rid of bed bugs are not only more effective than traditional methods, they are also more green and more sustainable. You will want to use a pest control company like Knockout Pest Control that has been licensed by NYS Department of Environmental Conservation. We are fully compliant with–and even exceed–all New York State and New York City Department of Health and Environmental Conservation rules, regulations, and licensing. Many of the bed bug treatment techniques we use are as green as they are effective.

Cryonite leaves no gummy, toxic residue, The CO2 snow evaporates with scarcely a trace within minutes. It won’t damage bedding or furniture. You can even eat off treated surfaces. K9 Detection Services by Certified Bed Bug Detection Dogs

Finding bed bugs is the first step in getting rid of them, but finding them is never easy. Even for professionals, the job of searching every possible hiding place can be time consuming. The use of a trained bed bug dog can slash the time and cost of bed bug inspections. Early detection makes all the difference. Our bed bug detection dogs can sniff out the presence of a bed bug from several feet away, wherever it may be hiding—whether in a mattress or behind a wall. The dog’s trained sense of smell detects the distinctive molecular signature left by adult or even nymph bed bugs down to 500 parts per trillion. Bed bug detection dogs can inspect your home in minutes, saving time and money, pinpointing an infestation and ensuring your home is bed bug free on following visits. Knowing exactly where bed bugs are hiding helps us apply the right bed bug treatment in the right place. Unlike other pest control companies, we use an independent company, so there is no financial incentive to “find” bed bugs that are not there. If you have the slightest suspicion you might have bed bugs, schedule an inspection before they can take hold.

Key Advantages

  • Fast inspection in minutes to determine a bed bug problem.
  • Precise pinpointing of the problem areas to treat where necessary.
  • Evaporates in minutes, leaving no gummy or toxic residues.

ClimbUp™ Bed Bug Interceptors

ClimbUp™ bed bug interceptors are a helpful tool for protecting against bed bug infestations and for monitoring your home for potential bed bug problems. Bed bugs are poor climbers. ClimbUp cups are plastic dishes you can place under bed posts or the legs of furniture. The bugs are attracted by your warmth, carbon dioxide and blood. When they try to climb into bed with you, they can easily get over the outer edge of the cup. Then they end up in the inner depression of the cup–the pitfall trap–only to find that the inner surface is slippery and vertical. They can’t continue to climb into your bed and they can’t climb out of the cup. Using ClimbUp cups is easy. Place them under the feet of furniture you use often. Be sure your furniture is not touching walls and that bedding and blankets are not touching the floor or walls so that you deny bed bugs alternate ways up and in. Contact us to purchase your ClimbUp traps.

Key Advantages:

  • Protect from bed bugs searching for a meal
  • Identify if bed bugs are present in your home–they get stuck in the trap where you can see them.
  • Assess if bed bug treatments are working.
  • Becomes your early warning system–you can even travel with them.

Conventional Bed Bug Treatment

We apply insecticides thoroughly to furniture, beds, frames, seams, mattresses, box springs, baseboards, etc. Some preparation is required.
