How to Identify Snakes
Snake problems are relatively rare in our area. Of the four species of snakes common in the Long Island, New York, Westchester, and Rockland County areas, none are venomous. The two most likely to be near your home are the common Garter Snake and the Eastern Milk Snake.
Snakes are carnivores they eat anything from earthworms, insects, and slugs to small rodents and other Snakes. If you have snakes in your home, it is usually because they followed prey or they sought an interior space in which to hibernate over winter. They usually gain access to buildings via cracks in foundations or basement windows. While not much of a pest themselves, if you don’t mind their feces, urine, and discarded skins, their presence is a sign of an insect or small animal infestation. They also deliver a painful bite.
THE SIGNS OF Snakes
Snakes are elusive creatures, so it’s not always easy to spot them, but paying attention to the following signs can help you determine if you have a snake infestation:
- Sightings: If you see a snake, either inside or outside of your home, it’s a clear sign that there could be more in the area.
- Tracks: Snakes leave behind tracks in soft soil or mud, which can indicate that they have been moving through the areas.
- Holes: Snakes often burrow into small holes or crevices, so if you notice any holes or gaps in your home’s exterior, it could be a sign of a snake infestation.
- Droppings: Snake droppings are small and elongated, and may have a distinctive, slightly pungent odor.
- Sounds: Snakes may make hissing or rattling sounds, especially if they feel threatened.
